The new owner had renamed the gallery Gallery Number Ten. Marvin Cohen, a suave young man in an Armani suit, welcomed them effusively.

“A great pleasure to meet you. Mr. Saunders regrets not being able to be here to greet you himself.” Marvin waved his hand. “Family obligations. You know how that is.”

Amelia’s beautifully framed photographs hung against walls of the palest blush, and seeing her work displayed in such an elegant setting impressed her.

“We’ll have a reception and preview this evening. The general public will be admitted tomorrow,” Marvin said. He pointed to a delicate, finely wrought mahogany table and chair at one side of the room. “Buyers will want your signature on the prints they purchase. Tomorrow we’ll be open from ten o’clock to four in the afternoon. Perhaps you and Mike would join Mr. Saunders for lunch in his private office. We’re having lunch brought in from Sardi’s.”

“What if people buy a framed photo?” Amelia asked.

“We don’t sell framed photographs. We’ll frame their purchases if they wish, of course, but we keep the framed ones for our collection. We’re planning to take your work on the road later this year. Oh, my.” Marvin clapped his hand over his mouth. “I should have let Mr. Saunders tell you that.”

Amelia shot Mike a swift glance. Would Mr. Saunders expect her to travel with the exhibit, to smile until her cheeks felt as if they would crack, stand on her feet and make small talk until she had no voice? This sounded like a repeat of the endless receptions she had attended with Thomas. And she had been younger then.

As they toured the rooms, Marvin described the reception planned for that evening. “Mr. Saunders has spared no expense. Nothing but the finest for you, Mrs. Declose.” He lowered his voice as if giving them top secret information. “Mr. Saunders has engaged a string quartet.

“And the dress for this affair?” Mike asked.

“Formal, of course. If you didn’t bring a tuxedo, I’ll call and rent you one. Just give me your size.”

“I brought a tux,” Mike said.

Thank heaven I brought my black chiffon, Amelia thought.
